Yes, Garmin reported on July 24, 2020 that Garmin was indeed hacked. The hack resulted in a 24 hour blackout where functionality for Garmin’s devices and website was completely offline. The hack not only affecting consumers but also pilots which use Garmin’s GPS software, flyGarmin, The FAA requires flyGarmin and pilots need to up-to-date flight paths. This cyber attack was so severe, Garmin was forced to stop all call center and customer services as well as stop all global manufacturing.
According to cyber experts, the hack was likely connected to a new strain of ransomware called WastedLocker, however, this claim has not been verified.
